That’s me, sharing at the Big Business Big Life event this fall. I didn’t always see myself here…

You may say I’m a dreamer…

…but I’m not the only one. And I have always been a person who dreamed big. My dreams have not always (or maybe ever?) turned out exactly the way I thought they would, but following them has brought me to new and wonderful places in my life.

Are you a dreamer too? Who isn’t? I know we all have dreams that change from day to day, whether it’s a dream that you could just get five minutes to yourself, or that you could change the world. It’s deeply motivating to envision something beyond the reality we are in—not that there is anything wrong with reality, but visions and ideas keep us excited for the future’s possibilities.

Not so long ago, if you asked me about my dreams, I probably would have downplayed them. There was a time when I really wasn’t sure what the point was, or whether I’d be able to do anything that could change the world. Of course, in those days I struggled to remember to eat and shower, too; but do you know what broke me out of depression and turned my life toward a happy path again? It was the realization that I did have a vision, and that I could do something positive.

I believe we all have a purpose, and that no contribution is too big or too small. I also believe—because I see it all too often with the moms I speak to—that we sell ourselves short. We stop our dreams in their tracks, afraid of their power, or maybe doubting their strength. We label our visions “silly ideas” or “wastes of time” when they are anything but!

Not every dream is going to come true, but you must follow your soul’s call. If you listen to your dreams, they will guide you toward your true happiness. I know this may be hard to believe, especially if you are “too busy” to take time for yourself. Believe it or not, it is true.

I thought my life had to revolve around the career I had built as an architect and the needs of my family. I dreamed I could go further, and change many people’s lives for the better. And when, finally, I stopped allowing my thoughts to get in the way of my dreams…that is when I started finding a way to make those dreams a reality.

Today I am giving you permission to dream, to think, to envision a new reality, just over the horizon. What do your dreams tell you? What does your soul sing for?
